Addressing the Unvoiced Struggles: An Ode to Those Who Stand Guard

This week in Dunedin, we felt a collective heartbreak, marking the untimely loss of one of our guardians. Such moments compel us to confront an often-overlooked reality: our officers' adversities don't merely end when their shifts do. In Australia and New Zealand, we face an insidious crisis: our officers, who courageously pledge to protect, silently wrestle with PTSD, workplace trauma and the myriad challenges inherent to their roles.

In the pragmatic spirit New Zealand is known for, we're not just identifying problems but actively seeking solutions. We're making strides towards change by capitalising on the Health and Safety at Work Act and forging partnerships with entities like WorkSafe. Currently, the NZ Police deal with two legislative issues under the HS Act in our courts. Although these might not be directly associated with PTSD or the concerning rise in suicides among officers, they signify accountability and tangible progress.

On ANZAC Day last year, our charity was started in a nod to our indomitable ANZAC soldiers who returned with internal battles of their own. Since its inception, we've seen a tapestry of triumphs combined with challenges. Despite the bureaucratic entanglements, the undying commitment from our blue whanau, the frontline stalwarts, and the vigilant public stands out brilliantly. Their enduring spirit encapsulates the essence of our Kiwi ethos, offering guidance even amidst adversities.

I urge everyone to rally behind our cause. Engage with us on online platforms, amplify our narrative, and stand as one with us. It's this vigilant backing from each of you that emboldens our efforts.

Every online gesture, every shared post, or word of encouragement carries a clear message: We recognise your dedication. We appreciate your unwavering commitment. Together, we'll foster an environment where our guardians can thrive.
